This course is designed for students who have no or little Korean language background. Instructor's consent is required to take this course. The objective of the course is to equip students with communicative skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing at a basic level in Korean. The textbook is designed for college students in the US; students will learn beginning level Korean in their everyday life contexts. In classroom, students are encouraged to use only Korean, and use of English will be highly controlled. TEXTBOOKS Cho, Y-M., Lee, H. S., Schulz, C., Sohn, H-M., Sohn, S-O. 2001. Integrated Korean: Beginning 1. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press. Schulz, C. 2001. Integrated Korean Workbook: Beginning 1. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press. REQUIREMENTS Attendance and Participation: In a language class, active participation and consistent attendance are essential for students' learning Late arrival: Students are expected to be punctual. A student's late arrival inevitably inter-rupts the class and distracts other students. Attendance will be checked at the beginning of the class, and all the exams will also be given at the beginning of the class. If a student arrives after the roll check, it's his/her responsibility to contact the instructor and change the "absence" to a "late arrival". Missing more than 15 minutes of class three times will be considered as one absence of class. Absence: In case of absence, the absentee must contact another student or the instructor for any possible changes in the schedule for homework and exams. The absentee is also required to visit the instructor during office hour to make up the missed class. Each unexcused absence will result in a deduction of points for participation and the absence can be excused only with a valid document. Four or more absences will result an automatic lowering of one letter grade. Tutorial Session: Students are required to attend the weekly tutorial session. Each unexcused absence will result in a deduction of points for participation. Homework: Homework will be assigned for each chapter and will be due on the date specified on the class schedule. Homework will be graded on both completeness and quality. Only half credit will be given for late homework. Vocabulary Quizzes: There will be a vocabulary quiz for every chapter. The lowest score from the eight vocabulary quizzes will be dropped. Quizzes: There will be four lesson quizzes, and the lowest score will be dropped. Exams: This course will have both a midterm and a final examination. The midterm will be given on Thursday, Oct. 16th, and the final will be given on Thursday, Dec. 18th at 9AM. Compositions: Students will be writing two compositions in this course. For each composition, students' first draft will be checked by the instructor and returned to students with marks for errors (e.g., G: grammar mistakes, S: spelling mistakes). Students then re-submit their revised paper attached with the original paper with the instructor's marks. Only the second revised paper will be graded. Oral Skit: In groups of 2-4, students will play a short skit in front of the class. Manuscript of the skit should be turned in by Nov. 11th to be checked by the instructor. Each of the participants should have at least ten lines of talk. Culture Project: Each student will pick one topic from the various aspects of Korean life & culture, and give a presentation in Korean with relevant pictures and materials for three minutes. You should choose one topic and sign up with the instructor by Nov. 10th. Language Table: Students are required to attend the weekly language table at least five times per semester. Make-up policy: No make-up quizzes and exams will be allowed without valid documents.
